The best routine is the shortest one a tired person will do every day. Build the Core first, live with it for two weeks, then slot in one active at a time, weeks apart. Never launch cleanser + vitamin C + niacinamide + retinoid + AHA in the same week.

Core routine
| Morning (AM) | Evening (PM) | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cleanse gently — or just rinse with lukewarm water if very dry | Cleanse once, thoroughly but gently. Micellar or balm first if you wore makeup or water-resistant sunscreen |
| 2 | Moisturize on damp skin | Treatment slot — empty on rest nights. A rest night is a feature, not a failure |
| 3 | Sunscreen last: SPF 30+, two-finger amount for face + neck, plus backs of hands. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors | Moisturize / seal: night cream or your day cream, with petrolatum ointment on lips, dry corners, hands |
Where actives slot in
| Active | Slot | Start frequency | Do not combine at first with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitamin C | AM before moisturizer/SPF (or PM if it stings) | Daily or alternate days | Introduce alone |
| Niacinamide | AM and/or PM before moisturizer | Daily | Nothing major — the ideal first active; it often improves retinoid tolerance |
| Retinoid | PM, on dry skin, before or sandwiched in moisturizer | 2–3 nights/week, building over 6–8 weeks | AHA that night, strong vitamin C that night, waxing |
| AHA (lactic preferred) | PM, on a non-retinoid night | 1–2 nights/week | Retinoid that night, other exfoliants, broken skin |
A sample week (once the core is stable and a retinoid has started)
Mon PM retinoid · Tue rest · Wed AHA or rest · Thu retinoid · Fri rest · Sat retinoid or AHA · Sun rest. Slow down further if you are red or flaky — your skin sets the schedule.
Patch testing — the AAD method
Patch test every new product
- Choose a quarter-sized spot that will not be rubbed off — underside of the arm or bend of the elbow; for a face product, a small jawline area is a practical second choice
- Apply as you would normally use it, twice daily for 7–10 days. Rinse-off products are rinsed as directed
- Redness, itching, swelling, burning or rash: wash it off, stop, do not use it
- No reaction lowers the chance of a surprise — it is not a guarantee. Still introduce actives gradually
- Home spot-testing is not medical patch testing. Recurring rashes or suspected fragrance/preservative allergy need a dermatologist's diagnostic patch test
Mistakes we name, because everyone makes them
Five new products at once, then no idea which one burned. Daily scrubs and cleansing brushes on thin skin. Hot showers, foaming cleanser, and no moisturizer until bedtime. A pea of SPF 50 spread over face, neck and hands and called “protected.” Retinoid + AHA + vitamin C on night one, then concluding “retinoids don't work for me.” Stopping sunscreen in winter — UVA does not stop. And treating a rough, scaly, non-healing patch as an age spot with a brightening serum.
